BIOGRAFÍA DE ZELMAR, DE MAURICIO RODRÍGUEZ

Anoche se presentó el libro de Mauricio Rodriguez: La biografía de Zelmar: “Zelmar Michelini, Su Vida, La Voz de Todos-” Por razones que nos se si algún día entenderé, el autor me pidió que integrara el panel junto a: Margarita Michelini y Gerardo Caetano.
Todo quien me conozca sabe que son esos misterios en los que no hurgo mucho, pero no dejo de considerarlo un exceso de generosidad y despropósito.
Cuando terminé de leer el libro hace un par de días, escribí sendos mails de S.O.S. al autor y a Gerardo Caetano. Preguntando qué, cómo, cuánto tiempo… Mauricio me respondió, «el tiempo que precises, (gran escritor e investigador, sin sentido del peligro). Gerardo por su lado, «es importante el testimonio de tus palabras. Yo estaré a tu lado.» Primero , como lo dije, pensé… con amigos así… Luego ambas respuestas, no mataban mi sentido de impotencia ante el desafío pero me tranquilizaron mucho.
Lo primero que quise decir es que el libro me hacía acordar la velocidad oratoria de Zelmar. No porque fuera escrito velozmente, todo lo contrario, sino por la capacidad de ir atrapando en un mismo relato, aveces en el mismo párrafo, la historia que se narra, el entorno personal de Zelmar (familia amigos etc.) en que transcurrían los hechos y el momento histórico en que transcurrían.
Desde su niñez, tiempos en que obviamente yo ni era nacido, hasta la muerte cuando tengo el privilegio de decir que lo sentía, no solo como referente, casi diario, sino como un amigo. Amigo de los que más ha influido en mi vida. No solo un amigo de mi padre. Era mi amigo también: punto.
El libro me conmovió y me hizo revivir cosas muy fuertes, no solo de tiempos compartidos.
Los temas del país y los del mundo en la Juventud de Zelmar, eran los temas de mesa de mi casa: El Golpe de Estado de Terra, La Guerra Civil Española, la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Mis viejos se conocieron en la militancia a favor de la República Española. Wilson abandonó el Partido Nacional y se sumó las filas del P.N. Independiente por el apoyo herrerista al Golpe de Gabriel Terra. Ambos, recuerda el libro, vieron caer el cajón de Héctor Grauert durante su entierro. ¿quien sabe si quizás no estaban, cerca en el momento sin conocerse el uno al otro?
Antes ya de los años duros, Zelmar fue muy generoso con Wilson. Como cuando se votó la ley Ley 13.326 el 22 de abril de 1965, sobre finales del gobierno blanco donde a Wilson, como lo recuerda el libro, ni siquiera le acompañaba su partido, en derogar determinados privilegios a los legisladores. La lista 99 como otros sectores progresistas del Partido Colorado votaron en contra, como lo señala Mauricio, sin pedir nada a cambio. Porque era lo correcto.
Y así va avanzando en los tiempos históricos hasta que la vida de Zelmar, hombre público, hacedor de la historia, se junta no con episodios que integraban no sólo el paisaje de mi formación, sino mi vida. Cuenta el libro,que cuando muere Liber Arce, Zelmar montó guardia de honor ante sus restos. No tendría yo de joven ni idea de lo que representaba ni mucho menos lo que iba a significar su figura. Pero le recuerdo al lado del féretro, cuando integrando yo un grupo de apoyo de la Pastoral Social de Conjunto junto a mi hermano de la vida y hoy Pare Horacio Carrau S.J. acompañamos a Mons. Carlos Parteli (arzobispo Coadjutor de Montevideo, Sede Plena con Derecho a Sucesión) al velatorio en la Universidad de la República.
Aquella muerte fue un punto de quiebre. Nunca había visto una multitud así. Seguramente Zelmar sí. Para mi viejo el desgarro era doble. La muerte de un Uruguay, el inicio de una etapa represiva, que escalaría más y más en la represión hasta un conflicto personal tremendo. Prefiero no elaborar mucho el siguiente detalle: El Ministro del Interior de la época, a quien el Jefe de Policía Cnel. Zina Fernandez, había convencido que los perdigones de goma eran preventivos, era amigo y familiar del viejo. Y por ser un hombre de profunda formación de derecho Wilson había ayudado a convencerlo que aceptara el cargo. Después de Liber Arce, vino Susana Pintos y Hugo de los Santos. Y enseguida, la interpelación de Zelmar.
Ahí me di cuenta de el tipo de afecto, que sin perjuicio de que iba incesantemente creciendo con el paso del tiempo unía a estos dos personajes. Ese tema tan doloroso papá se lo confió a un solo amigo, Zelmar: el miembro interpelante, que se lo llevó a su prematura tumba por lo que prefiero dejar por ahí el tema.
Antes de avanzar quiero a vuelo de pájaro citar tres anécdotas que marcan un tiempo del Uruguay. Un tiempo que los de la franja etárea de mis canas para arriba extrañan y que la gente joven siente su ausencia. Me refiero a aquellos códigos, casi manuales consuetudinarios de reglas de juego y de ética que eran el lugar común, el reflejo de los dirigentes de la época.
Cuenta Mauricio, la ruptura de Zelmar con Luis Batlle. Había sido su hijo predilecto, secretario, en mucho… del fín… Narró Caetano que Doña Matilde hasta ese momento además de su familia llevaba la foto de Zelmar en su monedero. Luis debe haber quedado asombrado de la noticia. Y el libro dice que Batlle le responde «Mire Zelmar que vengo bien… estoy en un buen momento, vengo creciendo… Y este le responde » Claro que si, si no. no lo dejaría ahora…»
En la misma dirección, narra cuando se congrega el conjunto de personalidades de primer nivel que va a acompañarle, en su nuevo desafío, Zelmar visita a la Dra. Alba Roballo. La ve insegura en la decisión, pero convencible. Y ante la falta de espontaneidad inmediata de su respuesta le dice, «espere Doctora, a lo mejor estoy dando un salto en el vacío. No se precipite y procuró con todo lo que tenía a mano deshacer el proceso de convencerla para des convencerla.
Finalmente, en esa misma dirección hay una anécdota que Mauricio Rodríguez cuenta en su obra, sobre el viejo Herrera, que presumo no sentiría mucha afinidad con Michelini. Eso hace el episodio mucho más rico. Zelmar tenía una empresa de taxis). Se endeuda, se funde, y le embargan los taxis. Un legislador blanco le cuenta a Luis Alberto de Herrera de la situación viendo en ella una oportunidad de golpearle. Y Herrera dice: » Lo embargaron? Quedó debiendo plata? Con el poder que tiene su figura? Noooo… No vaya a hablar mal de él que se ve que es un hombre honesto.»
Estos tres episodios… con franqueza, luego Gerardo… mi maestro en tantas cosas lo dice en forma más cruda… son un Uruguay que los canosos extrañamos y los jóvenes no conocieron pero precisan y reclaman.
Salvo disfrutar de la excelencia de narración y detalles novedosos de episodios conocidos, no hubo para mi muchas sorpresas aunque sí mucha información interesante. Sólo dos cosas me sorprendieron:
Lo primero, es que de niño Zelmar fuera tartamudo… Le creo a Mauricio. Pero vaya sorpresa. Su velocidad oratoria llegó a crear problemas con los taquígrafos. Solo salvada porque la precisión conceptual y perfección idiomática, permitían recomponer lo que había dicho. Pero recuerdo muchos taquígrafos que en plena sesión se resignaban y depositaban su lápiz en el escritorio frente a sí.
Lo segundo es la vida familiar. Nunca imaginé la cantidad de similitudes que iba a encontrar entra la vida de la familia Michelini y mis recuerdos de niño, adolescente y joven . En casa no había peleas por las milanesas porque éramos tres hijos en vez de diez. Pero ese padre que siente la necesidad de fingir severidad porque en el fondo es muy permisivo… Ese padre que sí se enoja de verdad cuando prestan uno de sus libros, era algo muy parecido en la vida personal al que yo tuve. Sobretodo cuando constato en el relato que todo enojo y penitencia terminaban en una gran carcajada general.
Me impresionó mucho una anécdota que podría haber protagonizado cualquiera de los dos. Michelini Ministro discutía por teléfono con su par de Hacienda [1] . En una mano tenía el tubo del teléfono, aparentemente era una discusión acalorada, y con la otra mano firmaba o corregía la correspondencia del día. Como si todo ello fuera poco en un momento tapa el parlante del teléfono y pregunta «¿Cómo le fue a Nacional en Chile?»
La llegada del Pachecato los encontró muy amigos. Nunca supe si la amistad surgió de las coincidencias o las mismas fueron surgiendo de la enorme confianza que Wilson le dispensaba a Zelmar.
Algunas veces votaron distinto: Ley de Seguridad del Estado, Estado de Guerra Interno. Peleaban juntos por el levantamiento de las Medidas prontas de seguridad, que Pacheco insistía en reinstalar una vez levantadas, violando la Constitución. Debo decir que ambos casos de divergencia he citado Wilson asumió su error y lo reconoció públicamente. Por eso cuando yo, sabiendo el dolor y costo que pagó Wilson por votar la Ley de Caducidad y aún así he luchando por su anulación, siento el reproche de no haber sido consecuente con mi padre. Tantas veces como se sintió que se equivocó pidió perdón por su errores que. si bien no se, sospecho, pero no soy quien para opinar por él ahora que no está,que posición tendría hoy sobre el tema. Lo que no dudo es que hubiera respetado y apoyado mi decisión en la conciencia o el disenso si obraba de acuerdo a mi conciencia de acuerdo al pedir perdón.
El día del Golpe, Erro estaba en Buenos Aires. Papá desde temprano estaba preocupado por la suerte de Zelmar y el Toba. Mil veces crucé, a pedido del viejo, esa tarde el Salón de los Pasos Perdidos para pedirle al Toba que se vaya, lo que hizo a medias escondiéndose en un chalet de Shangrilá.
Erro estaba en Buenos Aires y se decía que a su regreso iría preso. Chau fueros y desafuero. UN Golpe sin Golpe ni decreto, el peor de los escenarios. Desde temprano el viejo había estado en contacto con el Gral. Seregni. Ambos estaban de acuerdo en que Michelini le detuviera para ganar tiempo. Así lo hablaron también los tres desde casa cuando el Flaco fue a ver a papá. Seguro que el no regreso de Erro era importante. Pero Zelmar estaba «a Salvo» y el viejo respiró tranquilo.
También me impresionaron mucho la vueltas de la vida. Cuenta Mauricio que «Por los tiempos del golpe, Zelmar y sus hermanos tenían una muy disfrutable rutina con su tío, el escribano Omar Guarch. Todos los lunes los pasaba a buscar y se los llevaba a ver las «funciones populares» de los cines «Petit Rex», ubicado en Maldonado y Ejido, o «Apolo», en Maldonado y Carnelli.»
40 años después, el país vivía otra dictadura. La que un año después de este breve relato personal, iba a asesinar a Zelmar y al Toba, a Whitelaw, Barredo y desaparecer al Dr. Liberoff. Yo trabajaba en el Juzgado de Primera Instancia en lo Penal de 1er y 3er Turno.[2] Fue echado por el Juez por haber cantado el día del sequiscentenario de la República, el himno con excesivo énfasis en TIRANOS TEMBLAD. El actuario del Juzgado era el Esc Guarch. Fue detenido un par de horas para explicar por qué se había negado a notificarme.
Por ese entonces yo planeaba un viaje con el viejo a EEUU, Venezuela, y México. Antes estuve preso y al salir me fui a Buenos Aires sin saber que ya no volvería. Zelmar, si tendría por qué saber me dijo «no vuelvas, no te hagas eso ni se lo hagas a tu padre. Ahí me dijo una frase que recoge el libro. «yo tengo respeto y afecto por tu viejo, esas dos cosas juntas, son la que hacen un amigo.
El viaje fue un éxito gracias a Zelmar. Todos los contactos en EEUU nos los dio él desde L. Popkins, a un obispo de Dakota del Sur, un asesor de Kennedy… Pero sobretodo nos dio un dato muy importante. Mientras que estuviéramos en México, se celebraría un Congreso en Oaxtepec donde además de Enrique Iglesias y Orlando Letelier, habrían figuras influyentes de la política de EEUU.
Eso nos permitió sobre el final de la gira en Washington DC encontrarnos con el propio Edward Kennedy con quien con los años establecimos una impresionante amistad. Hasta el lugar donde meses después yo me incorporaría a trabajar ya muertos nuestros amigos, les conocí gracias a contactos de Zelmar.
El libro logra magistralmente ir contando en un mismo párrafo, historia, Zelmar en la Historia, Zelmar político, Zelmar excepcional y tierno ser humano. Por suerte, yo prefiero no saber la respuesta , ¿era su condición humana la que le hizo un gran estadista o vice versa?
Conocí dos personas con la misma costumbre , dar un caramelo o un chocolate que extraían del bolsillo a aquel con quien comenzaban una conversación con ellos: El Toba y Zelmar. El bolsillo de Zelmar, cuenta Mauricio, además de caramelos y dulces estaba lleno de papelitos con nombres de presos, de familiares de gente de la que se tenía que ocupar.
Asume Videla. Zelmar parecía el único en advertir los verdaderos riesgos que se venían encima. Yo vivía en el tambo con ellos, en el tambo que mis viejos tenían en el Sur de la Provincia de Buenos Aires.
Un día decidí volver. Llegué ala capital me el tren de las 17 y 30 y me fui a ver al Toba. Finalmente lo encontré en su Provisión 33 Orientalesde la que era propietario, junto a sus colaboradores Schwengel y Barreiro. Llegué justito, estaban cerrando. Nos fuimos a charlar a un bar hasta tarde. Era un optimista crónico , celebró la noticia. Luego llegué al Liberty donde vivía Zelmar. Lo encontré con su hijo Luis Pedro. Le di «mi noticia» Nos pidió un minuto a solas. Me miró fijo. Por única vez en la vida lo vi abatido. «No te vayas» me dijo, te respeto y te tengo afecto.» Soy consciente de que, en nuestro leguaje, me estaba tratando de amigo y cada vez que lo recuerdo, como ahora, se me llenan los ojos de lágrimas.
«Hablamos mañana.» Crucé (nuestro pequeño apartamento para cuando íbamos a la Capital quedaba enfrente) llegué a casa preocupado pero seguro. Ahora yo era un papelito más en el bolsillo de Zelmar. No sabía que el Toba y él comocían del secuestro de William Whitelaw y Rosario Barredo.
Al ratito me golpeó la puerta Marcos, el mayor de los Gutiérrez. Se habían llevado al padre. Cruzamos al Hotel Liberty y Zelmar ya no estaba.
Vimos cuanto gente se podía ver, Alfonsín nos ayudó mucho. Cuadno en vez de mandarme mensajes por el Dr. Rulé, me hizo ir a buscar por él, me di cuenta que estaban muertos.
Velatorio… Papá se preguntaba en voz alta, por qué él no estaba en lugar de ellos. Yo se que lo sentía profundamente. Luego que se llevaron los cuerpos , recién entonces se escribió la carta a Videla. La pasé a máquina mientras papá la dictaba con lucidez y sollozo al mismo unísono. Como Zelmar, podía hacer más de una cosa al mismo tiempo.
Como cerró el acto de ayer Caetano, qué peligro recordar a Wilson y a Zelmar por su carisma, su vida épica e integrarlos al galería de los románticos capaz de seguir convocando emociones, y olvidar al mismo tiempo el país que soñaron u que está aún por realizarse. Este año hace 50 de los proyectos de la CIDE, eso, nadie lo recuerda ni organiza actos conmemorativos.
Hace pocos días una estudiante de periodismo me visitó en la oficina. Me encanta dar esas entrevistas. Y lejos de tomar la misma el rumbo que yo esperaba miró mi oficina y me preguntó por qué estaba arreglada así. Frente a mi, el retrato de Luther King y Mons. Romero. Al lado la banderita del Toba.[3] Atrás mío una foto.
Luther King murió cuando yo era niño. Pero desde su viuda, asesores, secretarios , seguidores más cercanos[4] fueron quienes, por recomendación de Zelmar conocí en EEUU y me dieron cobijo. Muchos y muchas de ellos y ellas siguen siendo mi familia en el Norte. Mons. Romero fue el primero en darse cuenta seis meses después de mayo del 76, que yo no había llorado sus muertes. Me lo increpó. Me dio un abrazo y sobre su modesta sotana liberé meses de llanto contenido. Fue en los hombros de San Romero de América, como le llama su gente, que lloré al Toba y a Zelmar por primera vez. La foto de atrás, es de Zelmar y el Toba juntos en el parlamento. Como vigilando mis pasos. A unos les veo de frente para inspirarme. Los otros me guardan mis espaldas. Me di cuenta que le memoria de Zelmar, a quien ayer homenajeamos y la del Toba, presiden a lo largo a lo ancho mi lugar de trabajo cotidiano.
