Está en Uruguay el Dr. Edy Kaufman. Una fuerte carga de recuerdos y memoria. Una exitosa agenda que va aumentando como una bola de nieve a medida que avanza su visita. Algunos hechos históricos que sin duda quedan incorporados a nuestra identidad. Pasado, presente y futuro. Así se puede resumir su visita.
Comencemos por el pasado, así los que no le conocen, sobretodo los más jóvenes, saben de qué y de quien estamos hablando. Edy, ciudadano Israelí, nacido en Argentina, enseñaba por allá por los setenta en la Universidad Hebrea de Israel. Interesado en América Latina, preparaba un libro sobre la experiencia chilena, las circunstancias lo trajeron una y otra vez al Uruguay. Estaba, por ejemplo, durante el Febrero Amago del 72. Su interés académico fue variando y se fue uruguayizando. Se preguntaba ¿qué pasa en Uruguay para que una sólida democracia como la que se conocía, viviera los sacudidos momentos políticos que atravesó y que llevó a Uruguay la oscura noche del 73 al 85. Así su interés académico fue virando de Chile a Uruguay. Empezó a escribir su libro, años más tarde, referente fundamental para entender las cosas de nuestro país.
El destino tiene sus cosas. En 1976 Edy decide tomarse un año sabático. Y junto a su familia eligen Londres como su destino y como trabajo Amnistía Internacional (de la cual hoy es una de las figuras más destacadas). Allí pide para ocuparse del Uruguay. La campaña contra la tortura, las audiencias en el Congreso de EEUU para Zelmar, Toba y Wilson… Organiza campañas alrededor del mundo para denunciar la dictadura uruguaya.
El 18 de mayo de ese año, se llevan de su casa al Toba, a Zelmar del Hotel donde vivía. De tardecita yo había visto al Toba, y había estado hasta tarde de noche con Zelmar que vivía a una cuadra de mi departamento. Cuando con Marcos, el hijo mayor del Toba llegamos al Hotel Liberty, ya se lo habían llevado también a Michelini.
Cada uno tenía una lista de números de teléfono a quien llamar en una emergencia. Todas ellas empezaban con Edy. así lo conocí yo. Llamándolo para avisarle lo que ocurría como lo hiberno Marcos, hijo mayor del Toba y Chicho con quien estaba en el Hotel pensando que hacer,mientras habíamos mandado buscar a Wilson que vivía en un tambo en la Provincia.
Edy nos fue dando pistas de cada paso que había que dar. Nosotros le íbamos dando insumos de información para que él siguiera adelante su campaña. Hasta que un par de día mas tarde, le avisamos que habían aparecido muertos. Ellos más dos jóvenes Rosario Barredo y William Whitelaw que habían militado en la guerrilla y habían desaparecido dos días antes. Nada se sabía aún del Dr. Manuel Liberoff, secuestrado en el Hospital donde trabajaba la misma noche de los secuestros de los legisladores.
Ahí Edy concentró todos sus esfuerzos en encontrar el vínculo Liberoff y en sacarnos vivos a mi viejo y a mi. Lo logró y once días después, tras haber estado exiliado en la Embajada de Austria por su mediación.
Este año Edy vino a homenajear a Liberoff. Lo hizo anoche en el Sindicato Médico, o sea en su propio hogar.
La agenda de Edy ha incluido reportajes en todos los canales de TV, un programa especial en TV Ciudad, una grabación para Código país a emitirse la semana que viene, una visita a la INDDHH. Mañana habrá un encuentro con Estudiantes puerta abierta a las 19 en el IAVA que auspicias numerosas organizaciones sociales y Partidos Políticos. cada uno de estos pasos dejó sus huellas. En la INDDHH más allá de todo protocolo y de ser recibido por los Directores de la Institución, conversó abiertamente con el equipo técnico que acompaña nuestra gestión y contestó preguntas. Todo de una riqueza conceptual y de una rigurosidad académica mezclada con un tono humano, cálido cargado de su inocultable modestia.
Antenoche veía la TV en mi casa y sentí como justo Edy estaba contando el forcejeo del Embajador Austríaco con los paramilitares para poder ir a buscar a mi viejo y asilarnos juntos. Lo escuché con mucha paz. Esa historia que tantas veces he narrado, ese momento de miedo y desesperanza, ese episodio que raramente paso un día sin recordar… nunca lo había escuchado por un tercero. Y no cualquier tercero, un protagonista. Y así fue como con gran paz interior me dejé hundir en emociones y recuerdos.
Nunca dudé que le debo a él mi vida y el rescate de mi padre. Y que sin su apoyo los esfuerzos por rescatar vivos a los secuestrados no lo hubiéramos podido sobrellevar. Pero escuchando su relato tomé verdadera conciencia. No estaría, no existiría, no sería, si no fuera por ese hombre. Y ahí recién me di cuenta por qué hemos seguido siendo amigos y con el tiempo cada vez le quiero más a él y su familia. Y ahí me di cuenta que por mis mejillas hacía rato que caían lágrimas. Pocas pero gordas, cicatrizantes. Este 40 aniversario de estos hechos me han hecho una mala jugada más de una vez con las emociones. Muy lindo, las lágrimas no se habían secado. Ni se las llevó Mons. Romero (que sabía provocármelas) al cielo consigo. Están ahí y cada tantos hay que dejarlas rodar por nuestro rostro.
Ayer, como dije fue el acto en el sindicato Médico. Tremendo. Ocho personas que conocieron al Dr. Manuel Liberoff testimoniaron sobre su vida. Aquel hombre que de niño veía en blanco y negro en el programa Conozca su derecho junto al pastor Castro, Nelson Pilosoff, los padres Espadachino y Lopez García, el Pastor Milován y tantos otros… Ese hombre del que aún no se ha hablado suficiente… Manuel Liberoff. Ese médico de familia que como testimoniaban sus colegas, demostraba en tal condición no solo un rostro humano c¡inconmensurable, si no uno pionero de la medicina preventiva que recién hoy empieza a revalorizar la importancia del médico de cabecera del núcleo familiar.
Un homenaje esperado y justo. El Manuel Liberoff, no suficientemente recordado. El Dr. Manuel del pasado. El que nos conmovió al ser recordado por sus pares , la Fundación Michelini y Edy Kaufman. El Dr. Manuel del presente. Y ese hombre que ha ingresado a la memoria colectiva para siempre cuando se recuerden futuros 20 de mayo. El Dr. Manuel del futuro.
¿Que ha pasado con Liberoff estos años? En lo personal, nunca me refiero a las víctimas de aquel nefasto 20 de mayo sin nombrarlo. Pero pensemos un poco. No nos enteramos de inmediato la simultaneidad de su secuestro con el de los legisladores. Y no apareció con ellos. Si agregamos a ello: la dimensión pública de Toba y Zelmar, la barbarie del asesinato de los jóvenes Witelaw y Barredo a los solos efectos de confundir sobre el origen del crimen. La salida de Wilson al exterior. Aveces, muy injustamente, y hasta por su condición de desaparecido de cuya suerte no supimos más, lo han relegado del recuerdo.
Ese es uno de los tantos regalos que a nuestra historia y Nuestra Memoria Colectiva, nos hacen los organizadores y panelistas de ayer. Manuel Liberoff nunca mas quedará fuera o a un costado cuando conmemoremos esa fecha de tristeza, pero de lucha que es el 20 de mayo de cada año.
Con eso el viaje de Edy estaría más que pago. Pero esperamos que hoy jueves de tarde en el IAVA (19 horas) en esa especie de cabildo abierto de opiniones preguntas y respuestas, Edy nos despida con alguna otra grata sorpresa.
No me puedo explayar en la tarea que en su propia tierra, y alrededor del mundo Edy realiza para que palestinos y judíos trabajen juntos por el mutuo reconociendo, la convivencia armónica y la paz.
Dios te acompañe siempre, Edy, Habibi, que tanto en árabe como en hebreo quieren decir AMIGO.
