¿Qué lo motivó a escribir sobre Zelmar Michelini?
Tenía una curiosidad personal respecto de la vida de Zelmar. Conocía su vida política, su personalidad, había leído artículos de él y me daba mucha curiosidad y me encontré con que no había una biografía integral que contara toda la vida de Zelmar desde el nacimiento, su infancia y adolescencia, que de alguna manera también explica lo que pasa después a nivel público. El crecimiento político de Zelmar. Asumí el desafió profesional de contar su vida.
Se ha escrito más sobre su muerte
Esa trágica muerte en Buenos Aires en mayo del 76, víctima del terrorismo de Estado lo transforma en una especie de martil, pero no había un material que respondiera la pregunta de quién fue Zelmar Michelini. Asumí ese desafío que implicó una gran tarea de recopilación de datos, de entrevistas, testimonios. Estuve en los lugares donde estuvo él, en su casa de crianza, en la habitación del Hotel donde lo secuestraron y fue visto por sus hijos por última vez y estuve en la autopista donde apareció el auto con su cuerpo, junto al de Gutiérrez Ruiz, Rosario Barredo, Wiliam Whitelaw y tuve acceso a una copia de los archivos de inteligencia que demuestran el seguimiento del que era objeto Zelmar en su exilio en Buenos Aires.
¿Qué sentido tiene ir a esos lugares?
Acudiendo a estos lugares, en los que tuve la suerte de que algunos estuvieran muy parecidos a lo que eran en aquel momento, como la habitación de hotel Liberty, me permitió ubicarme en la ciudad, con su dinámica e imaginar algunos movimientos de Zelmar en el día a día, esos detalles me permitieron ir construyendo lo más fielmente posible la figura de Zelmar.
Hay cosas de la cotidiana que demuestran un Zelmar muy apasionado por las cosas que hacía. Le gustaba mucho jugar al fútbol y en su equipo universitario su suplente fue Alcides Ghiggia. Lo que te permite una investigación amplia es llegar a este tipo de detalles que te demuestran el Zelmar más íntimo, que es igual o más rico que el Zelmar más público que se conoce.
Hablamos de una política diferente a la de ahora, con otro relacionamiento entre los partidos, otro nivel de respeto al pensamiento del otro.
Eso es un punto importante. Era una forma de hacer política totalmente distinta a la que tenemos hoy. No sólo por los discursos y los tipos de argumentos, también desde el punto de vista del respeto a la opinión del otro, aun en las diferencias nunca se pasaba la barrera del respeto. Una forma muy distinta a la que vemos hoy.
Un ejemplo de eso es la relación con Wilson Ferreira. Juan Raúl Ferreira cuenta que cuando pasaba algo espontáneamente tendía a decir ¿dónde está Zelmar? Una forma de decir puede estar de acuerdo o no, pero necesito saber cuál es su opinión respecto de un tema.
Era un hombre de diálogo, habla como tupamaros y con militares, con Ronsecoff y con Trabal, era un hombre de tender puentes y de una defensa absoluta a las instituciones y a la libertad, hasta en su propia casa. A sus hijos les decía `piensen con cabeza propia´.
¿Qué pudo saber de esos últimos días en Buenos Aires?
Hay una especie de gran nebulosa entre el momento que lo secuestran, en la madrugada del 18 de mayo de 1976 y el momento en que finalmente aparece su cuerpo, que pasan más o menos tres días y medio, en esos tres días hay muy poca información. Hay una hipótesis, que es la de más de recibo en este tema, que es que Margarita Michelini estuvo detenida en Automotoras Orletti y allí en un momento pudo ver a través de la venda una máquina de escribir que cree que es la de Zelmar.
Rafael Michelini me contó que se cree que en esos tres días hubo una especie de discusión interna sobre qué se hacía con Zelmar. Hubo una denuncia hace unos años del ex dirigente Alberto Zumarán que les llegó una información anónima que se había dado una discusión a nivel de gobierno, en la que participó supuestamente Juan María Bordaberry donde se votó por mayoría la suerte de Zelmar.
Zelmar no sospechaba que lo iban a matar, creía que lo iban a detener y en el peor de los casos traerlo a Montevideo. De hecho, diez días antes del secuestro, le entregó una carta a un amigo suyo diciéndole que si aparecía en Montevideo, era contra su voluntad. Sabía que lo estaban siguiendo.
