Zelmar Michelini fut journaliste et homme politique, II conjuguait énergie et compassion, sens de l’humour et passion pour la vie, II fut abordable et améne, brillant orateur, passionné de lecture, grand amateur de sport, mais surtout ami et pére.
Né á Montevideo le 20 mai 1924 de Pedro Michelini et Aída Guarch, il eut trois fréres et soeurs : Santiago, Aída et Pedro. II épousa Elisa Delle Piane de qui il eut onze enfants.
Tres jeune, il travailla á la Banque Hypothécaire d’Uruguay et participa á la lutte syndicale. Étudiant en droit, il fit partie du mouvement étudiant et fut secrétaire du Centre d’étudiants en droit et de la Fédération d’étudiants universitaires d’Uruguay.
C’est en adhérant clairement aux idéaux de José Batlle y Ordoñez qui’l entama une carriére politique dans les rangs de la liste 15. II fut chef de cabinet du président Luis Batlle et leader parlementaire.
II fonda la liste parlementaire 99 dans les années 1960 et fut sénateur, ministre et candidat á la présidence, participant de maniere tres active au travail législatif.
Journaliste á Acción, fondateur de l’hebdomadaire Hechos, il exerça ce métier tant en Uruguay qu’en Argentine.
En 1971, il fonda, aux cotes d’autres dirigeants politiques progressistes, le Front Élargí (unión de la gauche), nouvelle force politique cree en réponse á la grave crise socio-économique que connaissait alors l’Uruguay et désireuse d’y trouver une sortie.
Suite au coup d’État civil et militaire de juin 1973, Zelmar Michelini dut, comme de nombreux uruguayens, s’exiler en Argentine. II continua depuis Buenos Aires á dénoncer sans reláche la dictature qui dévastait son pays et fít tout son possible pour aider ses compatriotes exilés. En 1974, il presenta en personne devant le Tribunal Russell, réuni á Rome, une dénonciation des atteintes aux droits de T homme qui se comrnettaient en Uruguay.
En mai 1976, il fut, en méme temps que le président de la Chambre des députés uruguayenne Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz et les jeunes activistes politiques Rosario Barredo et William Whitelaw, enlevé et assassiné á Buenos Aires par les forces de répression du Plan Cóndor.
