Thomas Hammarberg fue Comisiario de Derechos Humanos del Consejo de Europa hasta 2012. Comenzó sus seis años de mandato en abril de 2006. Anteriormente, fue Secretario General del Centro Internacional Olof Palme, de Suecia. Sus otros cargos han incluido los de Consejero Regional para Europa, Asia central y el Cáucaso en la oficina del Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos y Representante sueco en el proceso multilateral de paz en Oriente Medio.

Fue Representante Personal del Primer Ministro sueco en la Sesión Especial de la Niñez de la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas y Presidente del Consejo Internacional de la polí­tica de derechos humanos. Previamente, fue Representante Especial del Secretario General de la ONU para los Derechos Humanos en Camboya, el Secretario General de Amnistí­a Internacional, y el Secretario General de «Save the Children» de Suecia.

También ha trabajado en la sección de Relaciones Exteriores del diario Expressen, corresponsal diplomático de la Radio Sueca y como profesor.

 

Biographical Information

Thomas Hammarberg was  the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe until 2012. He began his six-year term of office in April 2006. Formerly, he was Secretary General of the Olof Palme International Center, Sweden. His other positions have included those of Regional Advisor for Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus at the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Swedish Representative for the Middle East multilateral peace process.

He was also the Personal Representative of the Swedish Prime Minister to the Special Session on Children of the UN General Assembly and Chairman of the International Council on Human Rights Policy. Previously, he was Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Human Rights in Cambodia, Secretary-General of Amnesty International, and Secretary General of Swedish Save the Children. He has also worked as the Foreign Editor of the daily newspaper Expressen, the diplomatic correspondent for Swedish Radio and as a teacher.
