Zelmar Michelini fue periodista y político. Su personalidad enérgica se conjugaba con la ternura, el sentido del humor y la pasión por la vida. Conversador ameno, orador claro y vibrante, aficionado a los deportes, ávido lector, amigo y padre.
Nació en Montevideo el 20 de mayo de 1924. Fueron sus padres, Pedro Michelini y Aída Guarch; sus hermanos, Santiago, Aída y Pedro.
Se casó con Elisa Delle Piane con quien tuvo 11 hijos.
Trabajó desde muy joven en el Banco Hipotecario del Uruguay y fue sindicalista del gremio bancario.
Como estudiante de Derecho participó del movimiento estudiantil; fue secretario del Centro de Estudiantes de Derecho y de la Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios del Uruguay.
Comenzó su carrera política dentro de la lista 15 del Partido Colorado, con una clara adhesión al ideario batllista.
Fue secretario político de Luis Batlle, diputado y presidente de bancada. En la década del 60, fundó la lista «99», por la que fue candidato a presidente, senador y ministro.
Desarrolló una intensa labor legislativa. Ejerció el periodismo en el diario Acción, en Hechos, diario fundado por él y en otras publicaciones uruguayas y argentinas
En 1971 impulsó, junto a otros dirigentes políticos progresistas la creación del Frente Amplio, una nueva fuerza política que surgió como respuesta y opción de salida a la grave crisis social y económica que se vivía en Uruguay.
Luego del golpe de estado cívico-militar en junio de 1973 Zelmar Michelini al igual que muchos uruguayos se exilió en Argentina. Desde Buenos Aires continuó con la denuncia de la dictadura que asolaba a su país y desarrolló una intensa labor de apoyo a sus compatriotas exiliados.
En 1974 presentó personalmente ante el Tribunal Russell reunido en Roma, la denuncia de las violaciones a los derechos humanos que ocurrían en Uruguay.
En mayo de 1976 fue secuestrado y asesinado en Buenos Aires por las fuerzas represivas del Plan Cóndor, junto al presidente de la cámara de Diputados de Uruguay Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz y los jóvenes luchadores políticos Rosario Barredo y William Whitelaw.
