Quienes conocieron a Zelmar Michelini le reconocen al menos dos vocaciones: la política y el periodismo. Hay quienes equiparan su afición por el turf a amabas pasiones y otros subrayan su amor por la literatura.
La trayectoria de Michelini como periodista es menos reconocida que su trayectoria política. Sin embargo, se inició muy joven en el oficio que años después, en el exilio le permitió ganarse la vida y ayudar a la familia que permanecía en Montevideo.
Trabajó en diferentes publicaciones, en Uruguay y Argentina.
En nuestro país, Accion, Hechos, momento en que creó su propia empresa que primero fue semanario y luego diario, y en El Diario.
En Argentina, escribió en Respuesta, La Opinión y Noticias.
Hay dos cualidades que se destacan en la personalidad y la vida de Zelmar Michelini las cuales, más allá del paso del tiempo, son imprescindibles para practicar periodismo de calidad profesional y ética, porque hacen a su esencia: el afán por obtener información y la adhesión a la verdad sin concesiones. Por eso la FZM considera adecuado transmitir algunos testimonios de quienes conocieron a Michelini, que rescatan ambas facetas de su figura.
Se trata de fragmentos de los testimonios publicados en el Ni muerte ni derrota / Testimonios sobre Zelmar Michelini, de César Di Candia. Ediciones Atenea. Este libro fue publicado cuando la apertura democrática y reeditado en 2006 por Editorial Fin de Siglo
Dice Efraín Quesada:
“Zelmar era consulta segura cuando yo me desempeñaba como cronista parlamentario del diario ‘La Mañana’. Lo llamaba permanentemente a su casa porque él estaba informado de todo y no era de los que te pasaban información interesada.”
Testimonio de Héctor Rodríguez:
“En el año 65, Zelmar me ofreció la dirección de la página sindical de un diario que pensaba editar. Dejé mi empleo en la industria textil y me fui a trabajar con él como periodista. En ‘Hechos’, mi relación con él fue diaria porque permanentemente cambiábamos ideas acerca del trabajo que me había confiado, que era muy delicado. Habría que mirar ahora con más de veinte años de perspectiva, pero creo que hicimos un diario que asustó a la competencia. Y eso fue lo que incidió para que una empresa económicamente fundida pero de buen tiraje como ‘Hechos’ fuera comprada por otra que editaba ‘La Mañana’ y ‘El Diario’. Zelmar como redactor de política internacional y yo como simple cronista.”

“Al terminar la aventura de ‘Hechos’ empezó a hacer comentarios internacionales en ‘El Diario’ y ahí se reveló con una faceta que yo desconocía: como un profundísimo conocedor de la realidad política internacional.”
De Rafael Michelini Delle Piane:
“Lo que me asombraba era la información de que disponía en Buenos Aires. Sabía lo que estaba pasando en el Uruguay mejor que nadie. Y no me refiero a rumores o chismes. Tenía por ejemplo fotos de gente a la que estaban torturando. No se apoyaba en presunciones sino en constataciones. Era muy riguroso en lo que se refiere a la veracidad de los hechos que denunciaba”.

“Creo que en ese año ’73 empezó a redactar una especie de hoja periodística sobre Uruguay con informaciones sobre torturas, desapariciones, hechos políticos. La hoja la reproducían no sé cómo y la enviaban por correo a mil direcciones tomadas al azar. Había cuatro uruguayos ayudando al viejo en esa tarea.”
Testimonio de Carlos Cassina:
“Como muchos deben recordar, en una oportunidad estando detenido Daniel Vigletti, circuló la versión que habia sido torturado y que se le habían cercenado las manos. Recuerdo que vine al Senado y le pregunté a Zelmar si era cierto y él con mucha energía casi diría que me respondió con severidad porque yo estaba propalando información falsa. Y después me dijo que debíamos tener especial cuidado con ese tipo de cosas porque si divulgábamos noticias erróneas, íbamos a perder credibilidada cuando tuvieramos que denucniar violaciones concretas de los derechos humanos.”
